I was curious about Hao Xing Fu Chicken Rice, a new stall that had opened next to Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Noodles at Dunman Hawker Centre. Since we would have to wait for a while before we can dig into our plates of Wanton Mee, I ordered a plate of Chicken Drumstick Rice ($4). Made with Golden Phoenix brand rice, the chicken rice itself was a little bland but that was easily fixed by drizzling some dark soy sauce over it. The Chicken Drumstick was perfectly cooked, with moist flesh and a thin layer of gelatin under the tender skin. I wasn't crazy about the sauce that was served with the chicken as it was a little too sweet for my taste. Chili-lovers take note! The chili sauce comes in 2 versions, "spicy" and "very spicy". I liked the "very spicy" version better as it packed a small punch and I would like to try adding some freshly-squeezed lime juice for a tangier flavour. Bland chicken rice aside, the Poached Chicken at Hao Xing Fu Chicken Rice is a Must-Try!

There's a huge pot of chicken broth at the stall and customers are welcome to help themselves to the soup. The folks running the chicken rice stall seemed really friendly. One of them even helped me to get a bowl of soup while I was rummaging through my bag for my wallet. What a refreshing change from the surly hawkers that we often get in Singapore! I had to ask where they were from before we left. Apparently, the people running the stall were from Malaysia and this is their Singapore branch. Interesting! I wish I could have asked for more details on where we can find them in Malaysia but we were in a huge hurry and there were quite a few customers queuing to buy takeaway packets of Chicken Rice.
