Going Loco down in Super Loco

Super Loco at Robertson Quay has been packed since it opened its doors on Wednesday, 13 August. The sister outlet of the hot Lucha Loco taqueria and garden bar at Duxton, Super Loco's menu features mostly new creations and a few favourites from Lucha Loco's menu.

Pineapple Southside Don Julio Reposado Tequila, Pineapple Juice, Agave, Jalapeño, fresh lime juice & a dash of Mezcal

I stopped by for a quick drink on Thursday as I had some time to kill before dinner. The friendly service crew were very welcoming and helpful. I tried a Pineapple Southside Margarita which was a tangy, spicy and fairly potent cocktail. Refreshing on a warm evening, I was pleasantly surprised when a waiter came by to leave a glass of cold water even as the crowd started to trickle in from 6 pm. It's so rare to get such thoughtful service in Singapore, this is definitely worth a mention. If you can take the heat, the Pineapple Southside at Super Loco is worth a try.

Our cocktails at Super Loco
Super Loco's Cocktails
Mucho Mojito: Mount Gay Eclipse Rum, Lime & Mint Mexican Mule: Don Julio Reposado Tequila, Ginger, Fresh Lime Juice & Ginger Beer. Guerro Punch: Don Julio Reposado Tequila, Pineapple Juice, Fresh Lime Juice, Cardamom & a dash of Mezcal

Last Saturday, we were still hungry after inhaling three different types of Tacos from Fiji Water Lime Truck at Orchard Central. My appetite for Mexican was whetted and I had to have more at Super Loco figuring that it should be easier to secure a table since not everyone seemed to be aware that it had opened for business. I was wrong. It was packed at 7.30 pm with a long waiting list. We put our names down and waited for close to 45 minutes before a small table opened up. Since we didn't have much to do while waiting, we started with some cocktails. The cocktails were just a little weaker than I would have liked and I couldn't help but wonder if it's due to teething problems since the restaurant was slammed with patrons and it was only the fourth day of operations. I guess this warrants another visit when things have settled down.

Guacamole and chips at Super Loco
Guacamole & Chips

Just like my experience at Lucha Loco, the lighting was too dim for me to get decent photos. I love the creamy and zesty Guacamole served at both Super Loco and Lucha Loco. Definitely a Must-Try!

Elotes: Mexican Street-Style Grilled Corn with Mayo, Chili & Cotija Cheese - Super Loco
Elotes: Mexican Street-Style Grilled Corn with Mayo, Chili & Cotija Cheese

One of Lucha Luco's signatures is Elotes, a Mexican Street Food snack of Grilled Corn. I'm not a fan of corn but the Elotes at both Lucha Loco and Super Loco have made a convert out of me. The perfectly grilled corn was smoky, slightly savoury and spicy. I was especially thrilled to note the consistency in quality at both outlets. The Elotes are a Must-Try at Super Loco and Lucha Loco!

Ceviche de Pulpo: Octopus Ceviche with Smoked Paprika & Squid Ink - Super Loco
Ceviche de Pulpo: Octopus Ceviche with Smoked Paprika & Squid Ink @ $20

I've never tried an Octopus Ceviche before so we ordered one to satisfy our curiosity. Tender and tasty with a touch of sweet spiciness, I loved eating it with a slice of pickled Jalapeño for a spicy kick. This is worth a try if you love Octopus.

Arrachera con Chile Ancho - Super Loco
Arrachera con Chile Ancho @ $32
Grilled Skirt Steak rubbed with ancho chilli & served with watercress

The Grilled Skirt Steak was full-flavoured with accents of smoky spiciness from the dried chili pepper rub. The slightly chewy texture was a nice change from the tender steaks that are so prized in Asia. My only gripe with this dish was that I had to do quite a bit of carving to get rid of the sinews in the meat. Aside from the sinews, this is a Must-Try if you like your meat beefy. By the way, this item is only available at Super Loco.

Super Churros at Super Loco
Super Loco's Super Churros @ S$12
Mexican Churros dusted with Cinnamon, served with Chocolate, Orange & Mezcal Sauce

We didn't order more dessert because we'd had ours while waiting for a table. How could we ever visit Super Loco without ordering any Super Churros? The chocolate, orange and Mezcal-infused sauce provided a boozy zing to the sweet Churros. The Churros weren't as crisp as we would have liked but perhaps this warrants another visit, don't you think? :)
