Lemon Tart & Latte @ Loysel's Toy, Singapore - Gastronomic Ruminations
I've always lamented that the best coffee joints are to be found outside of the East so I was pleased as Punch when Loysel's Toy opened at it's sleepy and breezy Kampong Glam locale. Though the cafe is not located in established food hubs like Siglap or Katong and is a little off the beaten path, it's pretty close to home and is a nice place to chill away from the madding crowd.

I finally found the time to visit them some months back. I didn't plan to indulge because I had just eaten a really substantial lunch. However, the lemon tarts on display were too alluring to ignore. The counter staff must have noticed how I was lusting over them and told me that they were freshly made. Ever the disciplined one when it comes to restraining myself from eating too much, I reasoned that the tartness of the lemon curd would help me to digest my heavy lunch and ordered the tart. It was just as well that I did because the lemon tart was awesome! Though the lemon curd was not thick enough and was too runny for our preference, the flavour of the lemon was a nice balance of sweetness and sourness. Each bite of the tart seemed to melt on our tongues filling our mouths with the fresh citrusy flavour of lemons combined with the crumbly and buttery richness of the crust. My friends and I couldn't help ourselves but had to order a second tart even though we were all supposed to refrain from snacking after lunch. This is definitely a Must-Try!
Valrhona Chocolate Cake @ S$ 6
Ok, so I got a little trigger happy with the snacks. After the first lemon tart had us yearning for more, I succumbed to the seduction of the enticingly dark Valrhona Chocolate Cake, whilst waiting to place the order for a second lemon tart. We loved the rich flavour of the chocolate cake but we couldn't finish it as we were too full from lunch. Definitely worth a try for dark chocolate lovers.
Latte @ S$ 4
The latte was made with Papa Palheta's Signature Terra Firma blend of beans. The latte here was smooth on the palate and didn't require any sugar because the milk was frothed to it's sweet spot. A nice mid afternoon pick-me-up.
